A Quick Guide for Making a Solar Panel at Home

Renewable energy is starting to become more affordable, but some consumers might think it is too expensive. The commercial panels are quite costly for production and maintenance, but if you are willing you can try and make a solar panel yourself. It might sound tough, but it is not impossible. It is a very exciting and rewarding project.

Homemade solar panels are starting to become more and more popular and many people are experimenting at home. The end result will help you save money in the long run. If you are still reading this article, then most probably you are willing to try making a solar panel. Below you will find all of the steps necessary to succeed.

Step 1 – Come up with a template and make the frame

As a start, you have to decide on the shape and size of the panel. Consider the place you would like to put it afterwards. You can make the frame out of plywood or some other light and sturdy material. This stage is for planning. Write the proportions and figure out how much materials will be needed. Paint the plywood panel so that it is protected from the UV rays.

Step 2: Solar Cells

The second step is assembling the solar cells. They are the most expensive part of the project, but the cost is much less compared to buying the whole panel and then paying someone to install it. Look online and at your local stores and choose the most suitable ones. You can check different essay writing services since they include templates. Come up with a plan for building a solar panel and keep up with it.

Step 3: Drill Holes in the Connection Frame

You have to drill holes in your plywood in order to connect the solar cells. That is very easy, but try being as precise as possible, since the fit is super important.

Step 4: Glue the Cells to the Frame

Next you have to glue the solar cells to the frame. Get some silicone glue – it is the best for such a project. You should always check the voltage before gluing down. After that it will be tough to make changes if you mess up.

Step 5: Solder the Wire

After you have placed the strings of solar cells on the frame, you have to solder the wires. You have to have an equal number of positive and negative wires. Put the wires through the holes you have drilled and then connect the negative to the positive contacts. You should check the current after that.

Step 6: It’s Electric

And now it gets fun! Electricity is very exciting. You will have to get a deep cycle battery, an inverter and a charge controller. These items are important. Hook the panel to the controller, and then connect the battery to the controller’s other side. Then hook your battery to the inverter, and you will be ready to go.

Step 7: Put Pressure on the Plexiglass

It is crucial to secure the cells. In this way you will have a good connection and the panel will last longer. Put pressure on the corners of every cell in order to completely secure them. Still don’t pressure them too much since you risk breaking the plexiglass.

Step 8: Install the Junction Box

After everything is assembled, you have to install the junction box. You should get one which blocks the backflow of current. In case you have a modern charge controller, you won’t be needing any additional backflow blockers.  Get a backflow blocker if there isn’t one in the controller and install it to the outside of your junction box – you should have easy access to it in case it breaks.

And you are all done! Check the current once again to be sure everything is okay.Turn the junction box and the backflow blocker on and you are ready to put the panel on the roof.
