You should never put these 11 foods in the fridge
Not every food is suitable to store in the fridge and while it’s beneficial to be chilled for others it is best if you leave them at room temperature. Find out more about the foods you should not be putting in the refrigerator.
Bananas
Many people put them in the fridge, but what this does is slow down the ripening process and turn the peel dark. A better idea is to leave them on the counter or put some of them in the freezer – in this way they will be ready for you when you decide to do some baking, for example.
Tomatoes
They should not be refrigerated either because if you do they will lose their flavors over time. The fringe will help prolong their life, but they will no longer be tasty.
Potatoes
The best temperature for them is 45 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 10 degrees above the average refrigerator. If you store them in a place that is too cold, they will change their texture and flavor. The best place for storing them would be in a root cellar. A good idea is to also store them together with apples since the ethylene that the latter emits, stops the sprouting process in potatoes. If you notice any sprouts, you should just remove them thoroughly since they are toxic.
Onions
When put in the fridge, they turn soft and moldy. If you peel them beforehand, then it is actually best to store them in the refrigerator. If you have unpeeled onions, store them in a dark and cool place, but not close to the potatoes, because they both emit gases that will speed up the rotting process. In contrast with the potatoes, the onions like more ventilation.
Garlic
Leave it on the counter, without peeling it, and in a place with proper ventilation. The fresh one will dry over time. In case you see that it is starting to sprout, you should cut those parts before consuming them. If stored in a fridge, the exterior of the garlic will remain the same which means that you won’t be able to figure out when it has gone bad.
Avocados
You should also leave those ones out of the fridge unless you would like to slow down the ripening process.
Bread
If put in the refrigerator it will go stale much quicker. This happens because the fridge will suck out the moisture from it. It is best to put it in a bag on the counter or freeze it.
Honey
It is a naturally preserved item that would never go bad if it is in a dark place and in a sealed container. If you put it in the fridge, you will make it more difficult to scoop since the crystallization process will have been sped up.
Coffee
It is the same as with bread – if you refrigerate it you make it lose its flavors. Plus you should know that coffee is like a sponge for other aromas, so it will combine everything you have stored in the fringe. This will not taste great, we promise.
Basil
In case you have some fresh basil with roots lying around, you should pour some water into a jar and store it in it. It will be just like having a bouquet of flowers and the scent will be amazing. You can also cover it with a plastic bag if you don’t have any roots. If you put it in the fridge its leaves will become black.
Vinaigrette
If you want to have a great salad dressing at hand, you can pour it in a jar, seal it and store it outside the fridge. If you put it in, the mixture will solidify and you won’t be able to use it properly. If you have also added some minced garlic or dairy, then you should refrigerate it.
